Best way to whiten teeth?

I heard once that you can use Clorox bleach to whiten teeth. Is that true? What is the best way to whiten for the long term?

- Jerry in Nevada

Jerry,

Over-the-counter whitening products like toothpaste or white strips may give you temporary results, but they will likely fade. This is mainly because they are not powerful enough and do not remain on the teeth long enough for long-lasting results. Professional teeth whitening methods will give you much better results. Not only are the whitening agents much stronger, they penetrate deeper into the teeth and remain on the surfaces for a longer duration. All of these factors means a whiter result.

Do NOT us Clorox to whiten teeth. Bleach is extremely dangerous and will damage your teeth and soft tissues. Bleach can remove moisture from teeth and weaken them. It can also increase sensitivity. As far as your general health, this is toxic when ingested. It will cause vomiting and damage your organs internally. In fact, if large amounts of bleach are ingested it can cause death.

Teeth whitening by a cosmetic dentist will give you the results you are after. First, he or she will examine the dental health of your teeth to make sure you don’t have any immediate issues that need to be addressed prior to whitening. Another cosmetic dentistry treatment you may be interested in are porcelain veneers. These very thin shells of porcelain will makeover your smile and will resist future staining. Porcelain veneers are more expensive, but will last for 10-15 years.
